Why I Started Running:
Two events roped me into the crazy sport of running. First, my daughter wanted to train for a half-marathon after she recovered from a fractured femur. Excited & supportive, I would accompany her for her distance running. Since I was waiting for her to complete her runs, I decided I’d try walking. At this time, walking 15-20 mins was painful due to the 2nd event, a skiing injury. Determined, I kept working to increase my distance. My orthopedic said I couldn’t run but walking was permissible. My walking turned into race-walking. In a few months, I completed a 10k training program, and the following year, finished 9 half-marathons in several states. The following year, 2017, I racewalked & finished two marathons. The more I walked/ran, the better my hip felt. One of my races in 2016 was a trail race in CO. I practiced running, since it had been years & it is an entirely different form then racewalking. That mountain race was tough; I finished in cold temps, rain & snow. It was that race that hooked me into trail running. So, for the last 2 .5 years, I have been running trails & having a blast! No more hip pain!
My Favorite Moments / Biggest Achievements:
My first road marathon was a journey of the highs in running, where you feel you can go and go, and also the pain of miles and miles, where you wonder how you can continue. Many emotions were involved for me to finish but it was definitely my proudest moment. A close 2nd was my first 50k trail race finish. Getting lost, a fuel mess up, symptoms of metatarsalgia flared, made it challenging. I used much of my mental training to complete that race but what an amazing feeling of accomplishment! I could now say I was an ultrarunner!
